Now Hiring: Public Safety Emergency Communications Dispatcher

The Town of Scarborough is seeking applicants for a full-time Dispatcher to join the Public Safety team. This position is assigned responsibilities involving the operations of communication equipment in a law enforcement communications center. This position requires skilled work of a technical nature to provide communications support and computer information processing to the Police, Fire and Rescue response to requests for assistance from the public.

 
Duties include: Accurately, quickly and courteously receives telephone calls from the public for police, fire, emergency medical or other public safety services for the Towns of Scarborough and Old Orchard Beach; obtains the essential information required by the call category in a timely manner. Accurately and quickly assigns and dispatches appropriate units and resources to police, fire, emergency medical, and other public safety incidents. Provides communications coordination of public safety agencies and resources. Accurately, and in a timely manner, uses computer-aided dispatch system facilities for complaint-taking, unit dispatching, coordination of incidents and transmission and retrieval of information through local, county, state, and federal law enforcement data networks. Accurately records information on a variety of forms and logs as dictated by operational policies and procedures.
 
Position requirements: Demonstrates initiative, good judgment, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to work successfully with a team. High School diploma or GED equivalent. Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts. Related supplemental training preferred. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the Town’s discretion. Experience in public safety dispatching, EMD desirable. Successful candidates must pass written exam, complete oral board interview, physical exam, background, polygraph, & drug testing, as well as a psychological assessment. Must complete and pass Certified Terminal Operator training, 9-1-1 certification class, and EMD course after hire if designation not already held.
