Recycling Information - General

We’ve been talking about recycling a lot these days, and for good reason – changes in recycling throughout the world are effecting us here in Maine. The biggest impact is to our town budget.

It is vital that we reduce the contamination in our recycling. Recycling loads arriving at Ecomaine with more than 26% contamination are being rejected and processed as trash - which currently costs $70.50/load. (As opposed to a non-contaminated recycling load currently costing $0)

Here is some helpful information to assist everyone in know what is recyclable, and what is not. Downloadable links are included.

Downloadable "What to Recycle"

Not sure how to recycle or dispose of something? The ecomaine Recyclopedia website is an invaluable resource! Simply type in the name of the waste item in question, and the website will direct you what to do next.

You can obtain information here regarding (but not limited to):

  • Paint disposal
  • Bulky items
  • Medical/Sharps disposal
  • Medication disposal
  • Electronic Waste (E-Waste)
  • Hazardous Waste
  • Etc.

Curbside Trash and Recycling

Collection Schedule

Place trash containers curbside no later than 7:00 AM on the day of pickup.
The trash collection street list and map linked below.

Holiday Week Collection

Trash collection MAY be affected by the following holidays:
  • Independence Day (July 4th)
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year's Day
Occasionally, trash collection WILL NOT be affected by these holidays. A reliable notification source for any changes would be the Town of Scarborough Publi Works webpage ("News" tab), as well as on the Town's Facebook page.

Storm Day Collection

Trash will be collected on storm days, even if there is no school. Only extreme weather conditions will prevent trucks from going out.

Trash Carts

The placement of the new trash carts is important so they can be picked up and emptied automatically by the vehicles.

Proper Curbside Trash Cart Placement

Trash carts are picked up and emptied by extended arms on automated trucks. Be sure to leave a few feet of space between and around your trash and recycling carts. Carts placed too closely together do not provide enough room for the truck arm to reach, grasp, and return the carts.

Winter Trash Cart Placement

Wait until the day of your scheduled pickup to place carts curbside. Do not put carts out on the side of the road overnight. Place carts back from snow banks. The arm on the automated truck has a reach of about 12 feet, so if the cart is set back in your driveway, your materials will still get picked up. Remove empty containers from the side of the road as soon as possible.

Curbside Recycling Overflow

As an additional resource, the town of Scarborough provides a ‘Silver Bullet’ for recycling of paper, plastic, cans, & cardboard.

Silver Bullet Location:
  • 20 Washington Avenue, Scarborough, Maine. Currently open to Scarborough Residents 24/7, 365 days a year
Please remember:
  • Cardboard boxes should be broken down prior to being discarded.
  • Absolutely no large/bulky items, electronic, or hazardous waste are to be placed in or outside of the silver bullets.

Household Waste Overflow

Overflow household waste may be brought to:

               Scarborough Public Works Department
               20 Washington Ave
               Scarborough Industrial Park
  • Drop-off hours:  8 am – 3 pm, Monday – Friday.
