In 2018, the Town of Scarborough joined AARP's Livable Communities Initiative which encourages communities to take action and pay increased attention to the environmental, economic, and social features that make our community livable for residents of all ages. The aim of the initiative is to engage older adults in an Age-Friendly Committee which will collaborate with local entities to address community needs related to AARP's 8 Domains of Livability.
Scarborough Community Services offers many no-cost or low-cost activities, programs, and social events for older adults, catering to different interests and activity levels. Weekly luncheons, often followed by enrichment programs, are held each Wednesdays for $8. Call the office to reserve your spot by Monday 12 noon. Scarborough residents aged 60 and older can enjoy free access and parking at Higgins Beach, Ferry Beach or Pine Point Beach with a Senior Pass. FMI contact the Town Clerk’s Office.
Library services include free delivery of library materials to homebound residents, passes to museums and attractions, free WiFi hotspot, and public computers. Printing and faxing is available for a small fee.
The State of Maine and the Town of Scarborough offer a variety of tax relief and assistance programs. For information on municipal tax programs contact the Town of Scarborough Assessing Office. Contact the Fire Department administrative office if you have questions about best placement for smoke detectors or need assistance with changing batteries. Scarborough EMS participates in the Knox Box program. A Knox Box is a small metal box that hangs on your exterior door and securely holds a key to your house that can be opened by Scarborough EMS in the event of an emergency. Scarborough Police hold Drug Take Back events in Fall and Spring, and there is a green dispenser in the lobby of the Public Safety Building located at 275 US Route 1, with 24-hour access. Free sand delivery is available to Scarborough senior citizens during the winter months. FMI contact Officer Jake Murphy 730-4334.
A Special Needs Form is available to provide Scarborough Police with specific information that could be helpful in the event that they have to locate, assist, or communicate with an individual of any age that may have special needs. Town of Scarborough uses the CodeRED Emergency Telephone Calling System - a high-speed telephone communication service used to quickly notify residents and businesses of potential hazardous and important public safety information. Visit the website above to create an account. (If your number is already registered, you will not receive duplicate calls. ) If you do not have a computer there are computers at the library that you can use to set up this free service.
Town General Assistance staff work closely with various units of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and with social service agencies to assist families in financial crisis.
