Importance of Proper Recycling
We’ve been talking about recycling a lot these days, and for good reason – changes in recycling throughout the world are affecting us here in Maine. The biggest impact is to our town budget.
It is vital that we reduce the contamination in our recycling. Recycling loads arriving at Ecomaine with less than 25% contamination are processed at a rate of $45.00/ton (FY24). However, if a recycling load has more than 25% contamination (non-recyclable items) we are charged the fee for the recycling load ($45.00/ton - FY24) PLUS the fee for processing it as a trash load ($87.50 - FY24). In short, a load of contaminated recycling costs the town $132.50/ton. This adds up quickly and is an entirely avoidable additional expense.
