Zoning Board of Appeals
About
Purpose
The Scarborough Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is charged with hearing and deciding a range of different types of appeals and special exceptions as specified in the Zoning Ordinance. Appeals heard by the Zoning Board include administrative appeals, variance appeals, miscellaneous appeals, limited reduction of yard size appeals, and practical difficulty appeals. Special exception uses are permitted in various zoning districts subject to review and approval by the Zoning Board.

Applicants
- A pre-application meeting with Town staff is now required prior to submitting an application for review by the ZBA. During the meeting, staff will review your request, the associated ordinance, and any photos provided. In some instances, Town staff may suggest submitting financial documentation, contractor quotes, or architectural plans as supplementary evidence of the need for a variance.

- Electronic submissions must be submitted on or before the required deadline.
- Payments for applications can be made either by check (mailed or placed in the submission packet). Other methods of payment can be discussed with Staff. If you have any questions please call the Planning and Code Enforcement Office at 207-730-4040 during the hours of 8 am to 4 pm.
Meetings
ZBA meetings are generally scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month, please see the meeting dates below or visit the Town Calendar. Meetings are held in Town Council Chambers at 259 US Route 1, or online via Zoom. Members of the public wishing to comment on an application are encouraged to attend the meeting and/or submit their comments in writing prior to the meeting to Doreen Christ at dchrist@scarboroughmaine.org.
